CED 592: Online Course Design and Teaching

Course Description

This course provides students with the basis for planning, designing and teaching an online course. Some of the topics are: creating a welcoming environment, developing a detailed syllabus for online students, stating measurable learning objectives, creating an online course that is easy to navigate, planning for interaction in an online course, designing appropriate assessments in an online course, developing methods of presenting content in an online course and teaching an online course. The mechanics of using an online course management tool will also be presented.

  • Design a course with logical and clear navigation. (NBPTS 4, 5) (NETS•T 4, 5)

  • Create a welcoming environment for his/her students (NBPTS 1, 2, 4) (NETS•T 1, 2, 4, 5)

  • Construct a syllabus that follows stated guidelines for an online syllabus. In particular, the MSCE student will be able to (NBPTS 1, 2, 3) (NETS•T 1, 2, 3, 4)

    • State measurable learning objectives from his/her student’s perspective

    • Develop a clear course calendar and course requirements

    • To the extent that the MCE student is able, he/she will

  • Incorporate the voices and experiences of a diversity of people in the online course

  • Make the content relative to the lives, experiences and perspectives of his/her future online students.

  • Design and implement communication (interaction) strategies to (NBPTS 1, 2) (NETS•T 1, 2)

    • Counterbalance the obstacles to social interaction created by the online environment

    • Neutralize the effects of ethnicity, culture, gender, ageism and those that might affect communication in an online course.

    • Design opportunities for his/her students to interact with each other in respectful ways.

  • In order to facilitate interaction, the MSCE student will be able to (NBPTS 1, 2, 3) (NETS•T 1, 2, 3, 4)

    • Design educational Discussion Board activities that are engaging for his/her students.

    • Demonstrate the ability to use a variety of methods, other than Discussion Boards, for communication (interaction) purposes in an online course.

  • In order to present content in an online course, the MSCE student will be able to (NBPTS 1, 2) (NETS•T 1, 2)

    • Identity a variety of ways of presenting content to his/her students in an online course to account for a range of learning styles that may be present in a diverse group of learners.

    • Implement at least 2 ways of presenting content to his/her students in an online course, other than uploading a Word file or assigning part of a text book to read.

    • Develop multimedia presentations suitable for an online course. The instructor will define the term suitable within the course.

  • Construct rubrics to evaluate specific assignments.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of selected Web 2.0 applications for an online course. (NBPTS 3) (NETS•T 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

  • Implement the use of at least three Web 2.0 applications in the online course. (NBPTS 2, 3, 4) (NETS•T 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

  • Design assignments and activities for his/her online students that address a variety of learning styles. (NBPTS 1, 2) (NETS•T 1, 2)

  • Construct and grade an online quiz.

  • Manage the Learning Management System (or classroom software) to present the class materials to his/her students in an online environment. (NBPTS 1, 2) (NETS•T 1, 2)

  • State and explain online teacher survival tactics that will allow online teachers to maintain professional relationships with online students. (NBPTS 1, 2, 3) (NETS•T 1, 2, 3, 4)
